A joint international operation supported by MAOC-N has led to the seizure of approximately three tonnes of cocaine and the dismantling of a criminal group suspected of trafficking large quantities of drugs into Europe using go-fast vessels.
Named MARE NOSTRUM, the operation was carried out by the Portuguese Judicial Police (PJ), in close cooperation with the Portuguese Navy, the Maritime Police and Italy’s Guardia di Finanza.
The operation followed an investigation into a criminal network suspected of transporting large quantities of cocaine into the European continent using go-fast vessels. MAOC-N has been raising awareness of the growing threat posed by go-fasts, including through a dedicated conference on the topic held last year at the premises of the Portuguese Judicial Police. These fast-moving, often small vessels present significant operational challenges for law enforcement agencies, as they can be difficult to detect, track, intercept and have also been increasingly expanding their operational range into the Atlantic Ocean.
The operation highlights the importance of international cooperation and coordinated maritime action in tackling organised drug trafficking and disrupting criminal networks seeking to use Europe’s maritime routes to smuggle large loads of cocaine.
