The Maritime Analysis and Operations Centre (Narcotics) — MAOC-N — welcomed the Irish Minister of State, Thomas Byrne, who was accompanied by the Irish Ambassador to Portugal, Alma Ní Choigligh, and several members of his team.
During the visit, Minister Byrne received an in-depth presentation on the Centre’s operational framework, including its role in intelligence coordination, operational support, and joint action against maritime drug-trafficking networks. MAOC-N representatives outlined the Centre’s unique multinational structure, which brings together liaison officers and analysts to deliver fast, integrated responses to transnational organised crime.
Minister Byrne was also briefed on the most current threats affecting the Atlantic and Mediterranean maritime domains, with particular emphasis on evolving trafficking routes, criminal methodologies, and emerging operational challenges.
The visit took place in the context of Ireland’s preparations for its upcoming EU Presidency, underscoring the shared commitment to enhancing international cooperation in the fight against maritime drug trafficking.
MAOC-N reaffirmed its dedication to supporting member countries in strengthening collective security and disrupting large-scale narcotics smuggling operations.
