The Spanish National Police, with the support of MAOC-N and international partners, has carried out the largest high-seas cocaine seizure in its history.
Last week, the Spanish Navy intercepted a merchant vessel in the Atlantic, en route to Europe, concealing 9994 kg of cocaine in 294 bales among a cargo of salt. Thirteen crew members were arrested, and a firearm used to guard the shipment was seized.
The operation, named MAREA BLANCA, involved coordination with the US DEA and JIATF-S, the UK’s NCA, Brazil’s Federal Police, Spanish CITCO, as well as the French and Portuguese authorities. After the vessel ran out of fuel and drifted for almost 12 hours, the Spanish authorities assisted in towing it to the Canary Islands.
This landmark operation underscores the effectiveness of international maritime cooperation against global drug trafficking and tackling complex criminal networks.
