UK Minister of State for Security visits MAOC-N and takes part in operational exercise with the Portuguese Armed Forces

MAOC-N had the honour of hosting a high-level delegation from the United Kingdom (UK), led by the Minister of State for Security, Dan Jarvis, and composed of representatives from the UK’s Home Office and National Crime Agency (NCA). The delegation was received by MAOC-N’s Executive Director, José Ferreira, and Portuguese Executive Board Member, Artur Vaz.

The visit opened with a comprehensive briefing covering MAOC-N’s analytical and coordination capabilities, its strategic role within the European maritime security landscape, and the Centre’s long-standing cooperation with the UK authorities. Particular focus was given to joint operational achievements and intelligence exchanges, which, over the years, have made the UK one of MAOC-N’s most valuable contributors. The session also addressed the latest maritime drug-trafficking threats and emerging challenges affecting the Atlantic and European domain, and provided an opportunity to discuss additional avenues to further deepen the already solid partnership between MAOC-N and the UK.

Following the MAOC-N briefing, the delegation visited the Portuguese Air Force Base in Montijo, where they received an overview of the Portuguese Air Force’s capabilities and their important role in countering maritime drug trafficking.

The Minister’s visit concluded with the participation in an at-sea demonstration conducted by the Portuguese Navy, showcasing operational tactics and maritime interdiction procedures designed to illustrate the complex challenges posed by maritime counter-narcotics operations.

This engagement further strengthened the ongoing operational relationship between MAOC-N and the UK, fostering dialogue on future cooperation avenues and reaffirming both parties’ shared commitment to combating maritime drug trafficking to Europe.
