On March 22, the French forces stationed in the Caribbean conducted a significant anti-drug trafficking operation, which resulted in the seizure of approximately 1,200 kg of cocaine aboard a fishing vessel of Brazilian origin.
After the information was shared within the framework of MAOC-N, a French Navy asset was able to locate and intercept the target 1,000 nautical miles off the coast of Martinique. On board, the French officers discovered and seized 50 bales of cocaine with a total weight of 1206 kg.
The French authorities had to approach Brazil and request authorisation to search the vessel and retain judicial jurisdiction over the case, in accordance with Article 17 of the United Nations Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances. The vessel, the drugs and the 6 crew members have been escorted to Fort-de-France and brought before the Specialised Interregional Jurisdiction Court.
Besides the participation of the French Forces in the Caribbean and the French Anti-Drugs Office (OFAST), this operation was also supported by the Spanish Guardia Civil, the US Drugs Enforcement Administration and the National Crime Agency from the UK, working together within the scope of MAOC-N.
So far in 2025, the MAOC-N countries have seized over 25 tonnes of cocaine in operations supported by the Centre.
