A Spanish joint operation undertaken by the National Police, The Guardia Civil and Customs (DAVA), with coordinated support from MAOC-N, led to the seizure of 4500kg of cocaine on board a general cargo off the Canary Islands.
Despite the adverse sea condition, the Spanish boarding team managed to gain control of the Togolese-flagged vessel and, after a careful search, found this significant amount of cocaine destined for Europe. The swift intervention of the Spanish patrol vessel ‘Fulmar’ and its crew prevented any possible transhipment of the drugs to other vessels, which would have compromised the seizure of this illegal cargo.
As a result of this operation, 15 crew members of Albanian and Pakistani nationalities, were arrested and brought before the competent judicial authority.
